Varicose Veins - Men Get Them Too

Varicose Veins are More than Just a Cosmetic Issue

There is a common misconception that only women need to worry about varicose veins. Evidence shows that 25 percent of men suffer from lower extremity venous insufficiency and associated visible varicose veins as well. Most have long-standing leg symptoms which compromise their daily routines, with symptoms worsening during the day while they are working or simply living their lives. When venous valves malfunction, blood pools in the veins, resulting in a buildup of pressure that weakens their walls and causes them to bulge. Over time, the increased pressure can cause additional valves to fail. Some patients experience unsightly veins, it is more important to note that there can be serious, if not fatal, side effects. Left untreated, these symptoms may progress to various life-style limiting conditions.

In addition to the visual appearance, many patients may experience one or more of the following leg symptoms:
  • Pain (an aching or cramping feeling)
  • Heaviness, fatigue, burning or tingling sensations
  • Swelling or throbbing
  • Tender areas around the veins
If you experience symptoms and delay treatment, your symptoms may progress to more serious complications including:
  • Inflammation (superficial phlebitis)
  • Blood clots (e.g., DVT)
  • Ankle sores or skin ulcers
  • Bleeding

If you experience any of the above symptoms, please call Boulder Vein Center at 303-449-VEIN (8346) to discuss available treatment options.
